No Shoulders

I slip an oar into
water & gently push
against the bottom

we drift while
perch thin shadows
in roots of tupelo

you point to where
they hang overhead
all skin & leaves

already lifeless
draped until one
slides through

a small space of
sky & into the river
just in front of us

surfacing bodiless
only its head floats
in our direction
